New Dark Age is an essay style film about simulacra and the loss of meaning that defines our society. Exploring and contextualizing everything from the child-proofed world to the electronic tagging of humans, to deskilling and nature deficient disorder, to the cult of transhumanism and the emergence of a genetically mutant form of humanity to the potential of the authenticity movement, New Dark Age traverses our very human efforts to find meaning and uncover what is real is our increasingly unreal world. A Dark Age is defined as a time without a sense of community. A Dark Age is a time of everyone for him or herself. During a dark age, mere survival is the only concern. No one has the leisure for higher activity, including keeping records. That is why a dark age is dark. Its principal feature is that we know nothing of what took place in it. A Dark Age is a crucible when the old, corrupt and exhausted institutions of a failed society are finally broken down and destroyed. Something new and better suited to human needs can then be built in their place. New Dark Age asks one fundamental question: Is a new dark age upon us? If so, what are the symptoms? And what can and are we doing about it. Is our individualized society inherently selfish? Or are we becoming increasingly enlightened? Are we hiding out in fundamentalisms designed to crush opposing views? Or are we shepherding in a new time of peace and prosperity? New Dark Age enlists the help of a broad range of social commentators: philosophers and professors, teachers and entrepreneurs, activists and change agents from diverse spheres of modern life to answer these questions and more.
